Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The Rivalry between the settlers and Hudson Bay Company over Rupert's Land started as soon as Thomas Douglas 5th Earl Selkirk decided colonizing the Red River settlement which is part of Rupert's Land.
Eventually, the company succeeded in regaining the settlement.
Due to the economic importance of the region, especially after the discovery of gold and the influx of great numbers of American and Canadian immigrants, the rivalry between the Americans and Canadians became more intense over the north western territory which was rich in agricultural and mineral resources.
The Americans expected the settlement to join them because of its good commercial relations, and consequently forming a political union as part of the Manifest Destiny.
East of Canada during the 1860s was separated from the settlement by a rocky area and forests.
However, the Canadians emphasized the dominion over the region by Britain from sea to sea.
The two rebellions of the Metis in the Red River and the north western territory led to the joining of Rupert's Land and the north western territory to Canada and not the United States.
This has the effect of strengthening the Canadian sovereignty and represented a strong blow to the American expansionist project in British North America,
