The aim of the research is to introduce the components of the tourism sector, its characteristics, as well as the definition of sustainable tourism development, its pillars, and its economic, social, environmental and urban impacts, as well as to present a number of policies and mechanisms for sustainable development of the tourism sector in the Kurdistan-Iraq region in the light of the historical analysis of the reality of the tourism sector in the region In light of this, the research attempted to address the problems related to the nature of tourism and its components, and the pillars of sustainable tourism development, and the effects it leaves in various fields, and what is the reality of the tourism sector in the region, And its basic components, the obstacles that prevent its development, and its sustainability, and what are the most important policies and mechanisms for the future to put the sector on the path of sustainable development.

The research attempted to answer these problems using the historical analytical method of the data that were available from its various scientific and official sources, as well as the researcher's personal observations.

The research reached a number of conclusions, the most important of which are: The Kurdistan Region is distinguished by the diversity of the elements of tourism (natural, archaeological, cultural, and religious), which places it among the tourist countries, and this is an opportunity that can be used to build a developed and influential tourism sector, and makes it a major source of revenue for the region, currently And in the future, however, tourism in the region did not rise to the required level compared to its diversity in tourism components, due to the challenges facing the tourism sector in the region, the absence of a future vision, as well as the absence of mechanisms and policies to achieve sustainable development.
