“Pragmatics can be a frustrating area of study because it requires us to make sense of people and what they have in mind,” (George Yule, Pragmatics, 1996.) This quote by the British linguist George Yule brings us closer to the real meaning of Pragmatics; a wide area of study that is open to a mutual exchange of influences.

It supplies and attracts various ideas and opinions, and holds a flexible structure very similar to its own nature, which makes it apt to change.

It’s almost like fluids, shapeable.

The Europeans grabbed it, incorporated it into their sciences and philosophy, and soon gave it foundations and branches.

Then, Oxford philosophers framed it making it more suitable to use in the textual analysis field.

Furthermore, Arabs used it within their culture and soon gained various interests and addenda ranging from translating the terms to preferring some of them over the others, or even to creating new terms tailored to the contact between pragmatics and the Arabic language branches.

This whole study shows that pragmatics can be very flexible in terms of accepting different interventions, affiliations, additions, and corrections based on science.

This includes the various designations, known by scholars and people, through which this science is known to different currents and schools.

Many language analysists wrote about this diversity; some described it as an advantage, yet others saw in it the ability to undermine and drain the pragmatic field.

Certain researchers had their say in this matter and preferred some terms to others due to many factors related to the function and the Arabization process, while others simply focused on the difference and highlighted its reasons.

What we really intend to do from the title “Terms in Speech Linguistics” is to extend the knowledge material available around these terms and besiege them from different angles.

The main goal is to broaden the horizon for new researchers and establish a more literal and scientific process in selecting the terms adopted in this type of analysis
