The availability of basic thinking skills in the content of Arabic language books: An Analytical Study of the "Beautiful Language" Book for Sixth Grade Students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia


The aim of research is to determine the appropriate basic thinking skills for sixth grade students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Moreover, the research also define the availability of these skills in the learning and evaluation activities of the content of "My Beautiful Language" book in its first and second parts.

In order to achieve these goals, a descriptive approach based on the method of content analysis was followed by preparing a list of basic thinking skills, preparing a form for content analysis in light of this list, which included eight main skills including (20) sub-skills.

The results of the analysis resulted in following:
The number of learning and evaluation activities included in the book "My Beautiful Language" in its first and second parts in which basic thinking skills were taken into account (1647).

The skill of production or generation ranked first in its availability with a rate of (28.60% ), followed by the skill of integration and combination in the rank.

The second, at a rate of was (24.10% ).

while the skill of remembering came third at a rate of (17.91% ), and the evaluation skill came fourth at a rate of (12.81).

Other skills were available to a small degree.

The skill of organizing information ranked fifth at a rate of (9.29% ), followed by the skill of gathering information at a rate of (3.64% ).

While, the skill of analysis came in seventh place, at a rate of (3.04% ).

Concentration skill ranked at the last with a very weak rate with (0.60% ) which means negligibility in training and activities.

The research recommended the necessity of including basic thinking skills in the new editions of "My Beautiful Language" book for the sixth grade, increasing its area in learning and evaluation activities.

It also recommended preparing lists of basic thinking skills needed for each grade of elementary school.

Thus, that curriculum designers and teachers can benefit from these skills and include a teacher's guide on methods of developing basic thinking skills.
