The research deals with Al-Farabi's theory of prophecy away from common traditional readings which almost argue that al-Farabi's opinions concerning this issue were mere repetition of Plato's theory on the wise ruler (the first head or the philosopher ruler ) who is superior to prophet.

On the contrary, we attempt to read Farabian texts in their cultural context as answers to intellectual questions raised in his age.

We conclude that prophet, first virtuous head and perfect philosopher are three denotations for the same extension, and prophet is higher than philosopher in grade, rather every prophet is philosopher but not every philosopher is prophet.

Prophecy, for Al-Farabi, is not only obtaining true knowledge but also it has social and political tasks related to constructing a virtuous nation or state.

The prophet is able to administer and guide people and state prudently to attain happiness for all.
