البحث في اللغة اليومية يشير إلى البحث عن المعرفة; يمكن تعريف البحث على أنه بحث علمي و منهجي عن المعلومات ذات الصلة بموضوع معين و يعرف قاموس المتعلمين المتقدمين في اللغة الإنجليزية بطلاقة البحث بأنه "تحقيق أو استفسار دقيق، خاصة من خلال البحث عن حقائق جديدة في أي فرع من فروع المعرفة" [1].
يعرف ريدمان و موري البحث بأنه "جهد منتظم لاكتساب معرفة جديدة" [2].
بعض الناس يعتبرون البحث كحركة من المعروف إلى المجهول.
إنها في الواقع رحلة اكتشاف لدينا جميعا و غريزة الفضول الحيوية، لأنه عندما يواجهنا المجهول، فإننا نطرح أسئلة على أنفسنا و فضولنا يجعلنا نستكشف ونتوصل إلى فهم أكثر و أكثر اكتمالا للمجهول.
هذا الفضول هو أم المعرفة، و الطريقة التي يستخدمها الإنسان للحصول على معرفة بكل ما هو غير معروف، يمكن اعتبارها بحثا.
