Abstract EN

Narrative is among the most recent and most important sciences that has entered in to thefield of literature and literary criticism in the second half of the 20th century.

Many scholars in the field of literature have also examined various texts from a narrative critical perspective.

Among these scholars is Vladimir Prop, the Russian structuralist, who in his morphology ofthe Russian tales, has examined the characters and their functions.

Character, which is amongthe most important elements of narrative, has sometimes been used in different prose and versetexts in a fantastic and imaginative way.

Among the poets who have employed these fantasticcharacters in their literary works, is Suleiman Isa, the great Syrian poet, who has writtenplenty of works in the field of children’s literature.

In this study, by focusing on Prop’s morphology and using a descriptive-analytic method,we have investigated the narratology in the fantastic characters of Isa’s poems in “Swings that Sing for Children” series.

After a short glance on the life of the poet, and bringing aboutthe theoretical discussions like that of narrative, fantasy and what is related to Prop’s theory, such as the dynamic elements (characters) and the stock elements (Functions), we examinedseven odes in Isa’s series using Prop’s model and tried to present an appropriate model ofnarrative structure in his poem.

The results of this study reveal that the fantastic characters inSuleiman Isa’s series have mostly been selected from the elements that exist in nature whichconsist of a great deal of his children’s poems.

Giving the child a vast viewpoint, the authortries to familiarize them with the common realities and also to lead them to a world beyond thereality.

The method that Prop has employed to investigate the characters in the tales and theirfunctions, is a very precise, organized and perfect structure that provides us with facilities thatwe can use to get familiar with the narrative structure of the odes.
