The definition of heritage evolves and changes over time.
Each generation redefines the limits that characterize the living and evolving heritage object.
Heritage has always and permanently opened and widened to contemporary social, economic and cultural reality.
We are talking about historical, archaeological, architectural, rural, religious, maritime, industrial, urban, scientific, linguistic heritage.
In all these contexts it has always been a question of transmitting from one generation to another a heritage that is valued at each step.
Oral tradition today takes on a whole new dimension.
It is no longer a marginal sector, but it is at the heart of societal development, not only in its cultural dimensions, but also in economic and political terms.
Through globalization and the emergence of a networked society using new communication technologies, man is moving from an industrial economy to a postindustrial information society, in which development proceeds more from intellectual capital, knowledge and know-how as traditional raw materials and energy sources.
Thus, "oral tradition", in the broadest sense of the term, also becomes a major source for the writing of history.
This is why it is necessary to introduce a transversal definition of the oral tradition which presents a set of knowledge, values, achievements and traditions resource constantly enriched and reassessed serving both to the development and to the reinforcement of the social bond and political.
Such a redefinition will undoubtedly have important implications for the conservation of historical heritage.
The question that arises today is the following: how can one redefine and benefit from oral tradition as an essential contribution to historical writing.

La définition du patrimoine évolue et change au cours du temps.
Chaque génération redéfinit les limites qui caractérisent l'objet patrimonial vivant et évolutif.
Le patrimoine s'est toujours et en permanence ouvert et élargi à la réalité sociale, économique et culturelle contemporaine.
On parle de patrimoines historiques, archéologiques, architecturaux, ruraux, religieux, maritimes, industriels, urbains, scientifiques, linguistiques… Dans tous ces contextes il s'est toujours agi de transmettre d'une génération à une autre un patrimoine qui est valorisé à chaque étape.
La tradition orale prend aujourd'hui une toute autre dimension.
Il n'est plus un secteur marginal, mais il est au cœur du développement sociétal, non seulement dans ses dimensions culturel, mais aussi économique et politique.
A travers la globalisation et l'émergence d'une société en réseaux utilisant les nouvelles technologies de communication, l'homme passe d'une économie industrielle à une société postindustrielle de l'information, dans laquelle le développement procède plus du capital intellectuel, des connaissances et du savoir-faire que des matières premières traditionnelles et des sources d'énergie.
Ainsi, «la tradition orale», au sens le plus large du terme, devient également une source majeure pour l'écriture de l'histoire.
C'est pourquoi il est nécessaire d'introduire une définition transversale de la tradition orale qui présente un ensemble de savoirs, de valeurs, de réalisations et de traditions ressource sans cesse enrichie et réévaluée servant à la fois au développement et au renforcement du lien social et politique.
Une telle redéfinition aura sans conteste des implications importantes dans l'activité de conservation du patrimoine historique.
La question qui se pose aujourd'hui est la suivante: comment peut-on redéfinir et bénéficier de la tradition orale comme apport essentiel dans l'écriture historique.
