Abstract EN

The present study discusses the role of Oil rent as a mechanism in explaining the pattern of state- society relationship in Algeria Under Former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and that is by identifying the status of oil rent within the authority's strategy to dominate society and discourage social organizations from achieving their aspirations towards democracy.

Whereas, the allocation and distribution policy pursued by the state leads the society to lose the ability to use taxation as a means of accountability and demand for democracy.

Rent induces the state to eliminate fiscal pressures, which leads society to abandon its political rights, primarily the establishment of a state of justice, law and good governance, and hence the reluctance of governed people from political affairs.

Therefore, the state will be politically independent from society, in a way that makes it immune to pressures of social organizations.
