Abstract EN

A functional analysis of the play "Othello" by William Shakespeare, in which we seek to search for the basic movements that control the tragic tale in particular and the drama in general, in which we relied on the mechanisms of the morphological approach, which is based mainly on extracting the functional units from the text after cutting it out.

In this research we reached to a set of points; the most important among them is that the specificity of the dramatic text cannot be a barrier to the application of the morphological approach, all the tales relied on what Propp has called the functional unity, confirming that the artistic plot of Shakespeare's tragic tale cannot be immune to Propp's functionalist example.

We also noted that the structural concepts of Propp's approach are very close to Aristotle's view of the tragedy, as the latter dealt with the tragic tale in its structural, focused on the form without the content and worked on the structure's study of the action's course in the tale, he also neglected the doer's personality.

By dealing sensitively with the text in the morphological approach; he ignored all the psychological and mental justifications lying behind the apparent formal structure, as he does not search the existing semantic network in the text nor in the writer's unconscious stock and its effect on the modularity of that structure.
