The purpose of this paper is to identify the main determinants of medicines consumption in Algeria, from 1980 to 2017, using an ARDL model (Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model).
The application of the ARDL estimation method has shown that the variables "number of doctors per 1000 inhabitants", "population aged over 65", "GDP" and "urban population" are significant and positively correlated with the level of medicines consumption short-term as well as long-term.
On the other hand, the variable public health expenditure as% of total public expenditure remains insignificant neither in the long term nor in the short term.

L'objet de cet article consiste à identifier les principaux facteurs déterminants de la consommation des médicaments en Algérie, pour la période allant de 1980 à 2017, en utilisant un modèle ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lag Model).
L'application de la méthode d'estimation ARDL a montré que les variables « nombre de médecins pour 1000 habitants », « population âgée plus de 65 ans », « PIB » et « population urbaine » sont significatives et positivement corrélées au niveau de consommation médicamenteuse aussi bien à court qu'à long terme.
En revanche, la variable dépenses publiques de santé en % des dépenses publiques totales demeure non significative ni à long terme ni à court terme.
