Abstract AR
Abstract EN
The study aims to clarify the role of the church in preventing and delaying the translation of the Gospels into English, and the historical circumstances around this subject, as the church considered any translation into another language as heresy and a religious crime.
It also aims to review the history and development of the Bible translations, and how each translation became a new Bible.
The inductive, analytical, and historical methods were used.
The study focuses on the history of Biblical translations, including the Church's historical ban on translation beyond the Latin language; Wycliffe's translation (1382 AD) was the first and resulted in punishment, while subsequent translations in England were affected by respective political and social milieus.
In relation to the Gospels, numerous newer translations hold a sanctified position, be they translated word for word, meaning for meaning, thought for thought, or freer translations.
It explains what the common Christians were deprived of reading the Bible in their own language, due to church censorship.
It also showed how the hands of translators intervened in the Bible to change, modify, and revise it.
