Abstract EN

The subject is focusing on the historical value of archival documents and the method of their use in studying the course of relations between the Eyalets of Algeria – especially the eastern Baylik which is geographically closer to Tunisia - and Tunisia at the beginning of the nineteenth century, by tracking their contacts at the level of authority and at the level of the citizens.

The importance of the study lies in tracking the area of transactions between the two Eyalets during a period of some independence between them at the level of authority; This was after the permanent intervention of the rulers of Algeria to resolve conflicts over the assumption of power within the ruling Husseini family in Tunisia between Hussein Ben Ali and his sons after him and his nephew Ali Pasha since the early 18th century; as well as research into the impact of geographical proximity between the two Eyalets, and their subordination to to a single rule; i.

the Ottoman rule on the nature of governance and the monitoring of relations between rulers, as well as the influence of neighborhood relations on the conduct of the interests of the citizens of each Eyalet.

The study is based mainly on archival sources; Correspondence in the Tunisian archives between the Bayats of Constantine - geographically closest to Tunisia - and the Bayats of Tunisia, as well as the Maliki and Hanafi Shariah court's records held in the archives of Constantine.

The research methodology is based on the inventory and analysis of samples of correspondences and legal contracts; It draw a picture of the mechanisms and methods of communication between the rulers and the citizens of both the Algerian eastern Baylik and Tunisia under different circumstances: famines or conflicts within each Eyalet, or between the two Eyalets on the border areas, as well as tracking the course of relations between them during periods of stability as well.
