This research paper is aimed at identifying the reasons why students are week at reading and writing figures in mathematics in the first stages in basic schools.
A questionnaire concerning both the students and teachers was prepared.
It contained 28 items responded by a sample of individuals.
It has been made sure that the sampling is reliable.
The recurrence, weighed arithmetic mean, Percentage weight and rank were used in each item as a statistical treatment of a sample of students and teachers in order to achieve the aims of the research paper.
The researcher has reached the conclusion that the students are weak because of the following reasons: The classrooms are overcrowded ,There are repeated absences from school,There is a little cooperation between the student’s family and school,The students are not at their ease when they perform something requiring concentration,6- The students are too lazy,The students write figures in the wrong direction,The teachers do not always correct the mistakes made by the students directly,A variety of teaching methods are varely used in teaching similar figures,The mathematics teachers are not skilled enough,Individual differences among the students are not regularly taken in to account.
Finally, the researcher has made a number of suggestions and recommendations.
