Abstract EN

This article investigates the outbreak and development of the conflict over Gibraltar between Britain and Spain in their pursuit to control the northern part of the Strait.

It aims to revisit the development of bilateral relations between Spain and Britain in the regional and international frameworks during the twentieth century on certain occasions, namely the two World Wars, as well as the presence of the conflict through regional and international organizations, specifically the United Nations, the European Union, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which are the bodies that involved in mediating the Gibraltar conflict between the two European neighbours.

This article highlights the events which prove the complexity of the Spanish-British relations that required coordination and cooperation within the European Community or during the years of the Cold War, and on the other hand; the stubborn positions of the two sides regarding sovereignty over Gibraltar, which would make them allies and sometimes opponents.
