Election legislations in most countries are keen to ensure that certain officials are not allowed to run for parliament unless they resign from the posts they hold.

This is a legal requirement and an exception to the principle of freedom of candidacy.

The point is to prevent combining having both membership of parliament and public posts.

By this condition, the legislature aims make sure that holders of public posts do not use the power associated with such positions to influence the opinions of electors.

Another aim is to keep such officials away from the political milieu due to the sensitivity of the positions they hold and the need to be unengaged in any other matter in order to perform their duties duly.
