The study dealt with alternative measurements and free access to information by studying the societal impact of a group of articles available in free access journals specialized in the field of library and information and included in the Scopus database, using one of the most famous alternative measurement tools, the PlumX, with the aim of identifying the role this tool plays in evaluating scientific articles, as well as the extent of the community’s participation in those articles, and to determine the correlations and their statistical significance between the traditional measurement indicator (citation) and alternative measurements (use, capture, mention, social networking sites) provided by the PlumX measurement tool for articles of open access journals in the field of Library and information in the Scopus database, and thus come up with statistical significance for the differences in societal impact between the articles of those journals, using the content analysis method, one of the methods of the descriptive approach.

The study reached several results, including the existence of a correlation between the traditional measurement indicator (citation) and the alternative measurement indicators (use, capture, mention, social networking sites) with varying statistical indications (0.01, 0.05), and the measurement indicator (use) occupies the forefront in recording the highest rate over the three years (2017-2019) compared to the rest of the PlumX measurement indicators through the College Journal, while the measurement indicator (mention) had the lowest rate over the three years compared to the rest of the PlumX measurement indicators and the lowest value in 2017.

The study recommended that researchers and academics be encouraged to use electronic research products and express their opinions about them in any social web sources to alert colleagues in their specialties to important and valuable research results.
