The underwater cultural heritage is a very important element of the national heritage, and it must be provided with legal and institutional protection, especially in the face of many of its sites being looted and vandalized.

Algeria, like other countries, seeks to protect its underwater cultural heritage through national legislation, especially Law 98-04 related to the protection of cultural heritage, and it has also ratified the 2001 UNESCO convention defining international principles related to its protection.

The protection of underwater cultural heritage is very difficult, because the expensive material resources and specialized human skills required by underwater archaeological excavations.
