Abstract EN

The Gerahiya al-khanya Manuscript (Cerrahiyyetu'l-Haniyye) is a translation of the last article of Kitab al-Tasrif (the Method of Medicine) known as "Practice by Hand" by the Andalusian Physician Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi (325-404AH.

) that was translated from Arabic into Turkish by "Sabuncuoğlu" chief doctor of Dar Shefaa in Amasya to be presented to the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Al-Fatih.

We found several copies of this manuscript adorned with illustrations, including two copies, each one of which has a text stating that Sabuncuoğlu finished the manuscript in his own handwriting in 870 AH.

One of the copies is preserved in the collection of Ali Amiray in the National Library in Istanbul (Millet Kütüphanesi), inv.

Tib 79, and the second is preserved in the National Library in Paris inv.

Many scholars differed on which of the two copies was created and decorated with illustrations first.

They also differed whether the painter was one or each manuscript was decorated by a painter.

Many of them discussed the possibility that Sabuncuoğlu was the one who created the illustrations of both copies himself.

Despite a large number of opinions and studies on both copies, no study interpreted the difference of many of the illustrations of the National Library in Istanbul copy from the text they illustrate, and their difference accordingly from the illustrations of the copy of the National Library in Paris.

Moreover, the reason behind the copying and redecorating of two copies of the manuscript in the same year to be presented to Sultan Mehmed Al-Fatih was not discussed.

Hence, the present paper is important as it is the first to address the reasons for these differences, trying to analyze them and reach new results that were not addressed by any of the previous studies.
