Abstract EN

We have ivory Oliphant attributed to the Fatimid era arrived, decorated with bird and animal drawings and scenes of swooping and predation, and these Oliphant are considered distinct pieces of art in Islamic art due to their rarity and the opinions raised about them by scholars of Islamic arts, and in the ence of an independent study that dealt with ivory Oliphant and their multiple problems We find it imperative that we address this important topic extensively in order to reach weights that partially contribute to uncovering this important topic, and this study aims to address different models of ivory Oliphant of various styles, through which three important problems are discussed.

The first is dealing with attempts to classify models.

Oliphant are divided into eastern and western, as well as dividing these Oliphant into different artistic styles.

And the second is the period of time to which this group of trumpets belongs, is it attributed to Fatimid Egypt or to the Islamic city of Sicily, or to some cities in southern Italy, while the third problem is related to the function performed by these Oliphant, as there is no direct evidence or explicit text or a source referring to the use of ivory Oliphant in hunting, then the term hunting horns is a matter of debate
The study is limited to the ivory Oliphant models with Islamic themes and motifs only.

Their numbers are 17 models.

They were classified into three styles based on their decorative design.

The first type includes 9 models, and the second style includes 5 models, while the third type includes only 3 models, and these were studied.

Models through two axes, the first is my description that deals with a detailed description of all these models according to their different patterns, and the second is my analysis that deals with the history of the emergence of Oliphant, methods of manufacture and decoration, and the technical classification of Oliphant, as well as the problem of function, history and source, and this part ends with an analysis of the decorative and artistic elements of Oliphant.
