Nitrogen and irrigation requirements are critical for crop growth; however, their impacts on irrigation efficiency and crop evapotranspiration are not well understood.

Therefore, it becomes a need for studying the impact of the interaction between nitrogen and irrigation on crop and water production.

A field experiment was conducted during the 2019-2020 season to study the effect of water stress and nitrogen on wheat yield, field and crop water use efficiency, and irrigation water profitability under central Iraqi conditions.

The study includes three levels of irrigation (depletion of 30 (I30), 50 (I50) and 70% (I70) of prepared water) and four levels of nitrogen (0, 140, 200 and 260 kg N ha-1).

The results showed that the irrigation treatment (I70) saved 23.3% water compared to I30.

When the moisture depletion percentage increased from 30 to 50 and 70% , the water consumption decreased by 17.5% and 35.3% , respectively.

The grain yield decreased significantly at I70 by 12.38% compared to I30, and the treatment of I70 outperformed in terms of crop water use efficiency and water profitability significantly by 35.27 and 14.16% compared to I30.

The percentage of increase in grain yield ranged between 19.94 and 32.55% , and the biological yield ranged between 27.36 and 38.27% at nitrogen levels, compared to zero nitrogen.

The maximum significant increase in the efficiency of field water use was achieved at 30.78% under 200 kg N ha-1 compared to zero nitrogen.

Increasing nitrogen fertilization improved the crop yield at high water stress.

The maximum yield was achieved under the interaction between I50 and 200 kg N ha-1 treatments.

Field, crop, and maximum water use efficiency were increased at the overlap between 260 kg N ha-1 with I70.
