The city of Basra in the Abbasid era was subjected to many sieges, including the siege of Yusuf bin Wajih, the owner of Oman, as its people resisted him with violent resistance, as well as the siege of the city of Mukhtara, the capital of the owner of Zanj, as it witnessed the strongest battles and the Abbasid army, led by Prince Al-Muwafaq Talha, was able to storm it and kill the owner of Zanj, which is the core of our study.

The political and social situation in Iraq in the year 255 AH was very bad, represented by the weakness of the caliphate and the expansion of the slave trade, which led to the presence of large numbers of Negroes, most of whom spread from Basra to Wasit.

The harsh treatment they were receiving was one of the most important factors that helped make their revolution to bring about a radical revolution in government that would rid them of what they were in.

Many clashes and battles took place between them and the Abbasid state, most of which ended in victory for the owner of Zanj and his occupation of many cities, including Al-Abla, Abadan and Ahwaz and his control over Basra.

In the year 267 AH, and after the failure of many leaders sent by the Abbasid Caliphate to repel the attacks of the Zanj, the Abbasid Caliph, who relied on God, found it necessary to appoint a brave leader.

After the Zanj war, the choice was made on his brother Abu Ahmad al-Muwaffaq, who was sent to him from Mecca.
