a predominant notion in contemporary linguistic and pragmatic studies.

Chomsky's early studies of language relied mostly on this concept which he called linguistic competence, that is to say, the speaker's ability to use grammar rules in order to create meaningful phrases.

Soon, pragmatics took over and a new concept is created that of pragmatic competence.

This new notion is not opposed of the first one but it constitutes a continuation in the process of language understanding.

Pragmatic competence is based on the speaker's knowledge about the world, especially the hearer's status and the situation of interaction.

Pragmatic competence, from this angle, is based on elements of discourse that should be taken beforehand.

It also means that verbal interaction try to comply with its rules.

Our objective in this paper is to explain the nature of pragmatic competence and the way it affects the form and content of discourse.

It also reveals the embodiment of social context in language use.
