Abstract EN

The purpose of this research is to study some of the social and economic aspects of the Heliopolis suburb that was established under a concession contract in 1906.

Contrary to the colonial patterns prevailing in the early twentieth century, the Heliopolis Company (The Railroads and Heliopolis Oases Company), despite its foreign ownership, did not attempt to create a secluded suburb for resident foreigners, but rather sought from the beginning to the creation of a diverse society that includes Egyptians and foreigners of different sects.

The paper provides a historical introduction to the policies of urban expansion in Cairo in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

It reminds the reader of urban development patterns under the British occupation.

The research also deals with a set of unique characteristics that deserve study in the establishment of the Heliopolis suburb; including its unique urban design, how to finance the suburb, the transportation system and linking it to Cairo, and the rate of population growth compared to other Cairo suburbs such as Maadi and Zaytoun.

Finally, in this paper we analyze the demographic structure of the suburb in the early second half of the twentieth century, specifically in the period from 1947-1954.

We show that this unique suburb was an example of pluralism and ethnic harmony before the launch of what is called Globalization, half a century later.
