Abstract EN

This study investigated the relationship between occupational safety and health and the work performance of the employees of public university libraries in Jordan from their point of view.

It also investigated the impact of the following variables: job title, sex, specialization, educational qualification and experience on the degree of employee performance.

The study population consisted of all (335) employees working at public university libraries in Jordan, of whom (277) responded, presenting (%81.5) of the study population.

In order to achieve the objectives of the study and to answer its questions, a questionnaire was developed consisted of three parts: the first, included personal data of respondents ( job title, sex, specialization, educational qualifications and years of experience), the second consisted of five dimensions related to the procedures of occupational safety and health, which are: (organizational procedures, environmental procedures, health procedures, punitive procedures, preventive procedures ), and the third part was concerned with work performance from the employees point of view.

Results showed that the total score of employees' estimation of the reality of occupational safety and health in the researched libraries was average, and that all of the study dimensions were estimated average as well, and that the organizational and environmental measures were ranked first and second respectively in their estimates.

Findings also showed that statistically significant differences ( α=0.05) were found between the means of responses on the reality of occupational safety and health due to job title, and infavour of managers, and due to years of experience, and infavour of those respondents who have five years or less of experience.

The results also showed that the total degree of respondents estimation of their work performance was high, and that there was a significant correlation at (a=0.05) between the reality of occupational safety and health and work performance, except of punitive procedures, which had a weak correlation with no significant differences.

The study recommended that Jordanian public university libraries should prepare a comprehensive strategic plan for occupational safety and health includes all procedures that lead to achieving all goals intended, and provide all equipment and tools required to safeguard employees from threats in the work environment.
