This research paper examines the effect of education on economic growth.

It tries first to verify the existence of positive impact of education, and then study the trade- off between the view that this impact is temporary and vanishes in the long run as the rate of growth of income per capita reaches the steady state level, and the view that education impact prevails whatever the level of this growth rate.

The research stems from two economic growth models.

The first is the augmented Solow model of external growth 1990, being a representative of the first view.

The second model is that of the endogenous growth by Lucas 1988, which represent the second view.

Then a test was carried out on a sample of developed and less developed countries, classified according to patterns of growth, using the error correction model for panel data.

The results back the likelihood of the second view in countries experiencing considerable economic growth, while in those countries that had feeble growth or even negative growth rate, education had no significant impact.
