Abstract EN

The study aimed to identify the level of self-handicapping and cognitive distortions among (Al al-Bayt) University students, and the ability of cognitive distortions to predict self-handicapping.

And detect differences in the level of self-handicapping depending on the variables of sex and college or interaction between them.

The sample consisted of (643) students at (Al al-Bayt) University.

To achieve the objectives of the study, the Self-handicapping Scale developed by Jones & Rhodewalt (1982) and the Cognitive distortions Scale (Salah al-Din, 2015) were used.

The results revealed that the level of self- handicapping and cognitive distortions was moderate, and showed that cognitive distortions explain (14.1%) of self-handicapping, also indicated that there are statistically significant differences in the level of total self-handicapping attributable to the sex variable and in favor of males, and differences according to college and for the benefit of human faculties and differences depending on the interaction between two variables
