Abstract EN

This research aims at highlighting and arousing attention to the importance and timeliness of regenerating the Ashʿari theology while considering the close relationship between the issue of the timeliness and effectiveness of the Ashʿari creed in today´s reality of the observant Muslim and the creed´s interaction with and reactions to the issues and the challenges inhibiting the progress and development of Islamic societies.

the main issue, however, concerns the extent to which the Islamic world can affect and interact with the ongoing modern developments without detracting from its moderate and tolerant nature, or being caught in the tendency to break from or clash with reality.

the obsolescence and bigotry of the Ashʿari theology, keeping away from intellectual pluralism and focusing on a monistic tendency as well as on the notion of the unseen and the divine, are both remnants of ancient Greek thought and philosophy.

these epistemological dilemmas and constraints have limited the possibility to fully connect with the global / modern culture which requires new paradigms stemming from exclusive perceptions and views.

restoring the effectiveness of the Ashʿari thinking is more like restoring the capacity of the Ashari thought and philosophy to transform and guide Moslems towards integrating in the global cultural context which takes into account the human dimension in religious thought instead of the unseen ones, and which also necessitates both the practical and values dimension of humanity instead of reiterating the formalistic thinking patterns and the abstract nature of reasoning.

the effectiveness of the new Ashʿari thinking requires and consists in offering its adherents the reference materials required to interact positively with the outcomes of modernism, which were once shunned as infidel by former Ashʿarites, yet are considered truly as one among other types of Islamic rationalism according to Muhammad Iqbal and Ernest
