English Abstract

The author starts this article with an emphasis on the importance of folksongs within the field of folklore, then gives a brief survey of the Orientalist efforts in the field of Palestinian folklore and the history of the native Palestinian folklore movement.

The author then goes on to show the close similairties between traditional village wedding processions and present day political demonstrations.

He shows further that many of the slogans chanted during demonstrations are actually derived from traditional wedding songs and how wedding songs often reflect themes and events, consequenthy becoming a record, of the national struggle.

The author then surveys a large number of wedding and other folksongs which reflect and document the Palestinian struggle from the beginning of the 20th Century under the Ottoman rule through the British mandate , the Jordanian rule , and Israeli Occupation, up to the present time.
