English Abstract

“Mawasim” are fairs held anaually, their dates and location are set and never change.

“Mahrajanat" on the other hand are folk festivals held usually on demand as the occasion arises.

The author writes that both types originally derive from fairs which used to be held in the Arabian Peninsula in Pre-Islamic days The author compares and contrasts these two types of occasions in terms of several significant variables such as the time of the year, location, organizers, activities, duration, and the type of crowd which attends each.

The author then shows the relationship between “Mawasim” in Palestine and the effect of the Crusader Wars.

The logic behind the name location, and political imphication of each of these “Mawsim” is explained.

The 20th Century is divided into four periods in terms of the significance of the “Mahrajanat” for the political situation in Palestine; the most politically important being the period since 1960.

The author concludes that the coming together of the crowds in these fairs and festivale has been extremely important for the Palestinian people, and that the importance of such fairs and festivals is expected to be even more important in the 21st Century
