In this article, Dr.
Haddad reviews an article by Dr.
Sharif Kanaana published in edition No 26 of this magazine under the title: “The Arab Ear and the American Eye”.
Dr.
Haddad introduces his article by presenting a variety of relevant cultural concepts as adopted by a number of researchers.
He then presents a variety of quotations from Arabic formal and popular literature that emphasize the importance of the eye and its priority to the ear.
He reinforces this position by quoting and orientalist in praise of Arab scholars and their creativity in various fields.
Finally Dr.
Haddad refers to different aspects of Palestinian Folklife wherein the Eye has a greater influence than the Ear such as : popular games, popular songs and the Evil Eye.
