Abstract EN

In this paper, we explore the metaphoric expressions in legal language.

We argue that the language of law utilizes metaphor to produce an optimal relevance.

Metaphoric expressions play a key role in the communicational process deepening our knowledge of certain rules in the language of law.

We suggest that metaphors can be divided into argumentation and directive.

This division is based on goals of the language of law.

We show that directive metaphor is present in legislative texts.

This type of metaphor has a communicational function to guide the addressee to better understand legal rules.

However, we indicate that argumentation metaphor is realized in lawsuits.

A goal of the argumentation metaphor is to prove and provide pieces of evidence to condemn the accused or to defend them.
