Abstract EN
This research attempts to introduce the self and the other not as a duality, but as two parallel entities, presented in two discrete forms, even when they exist in a case of polarization.
The former represents the self of the narrator, and the latter represents the other, which is separate from the narrator, not in terms of multiplicity, but in terms of diversity.
The contrast and friction between the self and the other has long been tackled in different Arabic novels, and the researcher finds Ali Badr’s ‘Playing with the Clouds’ as a typical example for such a contrast and a friction.
The novel depicts both convergence and divergence between the self-narrator and the diversifying other, as is been manifested by the different levels of narration, as well as by the most important of its techniques, that is, the dialogue, which simultaneously constructs symmetrical and contradictory manifestations.
These manifestations are formulated by various semantic fields and were organized in the overall process of storytelling, which helps the formulation of the linguistic patterns constituting the message of the text.
