Abstract EN

During the period 1990-2006 the state followed an intervention policy by fixing prices of the strategic crops; among them Wheat.

Such a policy was basically aimed at subsidizing purchasing prices of producers and selling prices of consumers and then covered the gap between the two prices through the imports.

The hypothesis of research is that the positive impacts of such a pricing policy were in favour of consumers rather than producers.

Demand and supply functions of Wheat were estimated, however, the prices were compensated by the Net Nominal Protection Coefficient which describes the relationship between domestic prices and border prices.

The results shown that there were an annual increment of 68.4 ton of production of Wheat against an annual increment of 161.8 ton of consumption for the same analytical period.

Moreover, a change of one unit of NNP could results in increasing supply of Wheat by 1004.3 ton against 1740.9 ton of demand which is clear evidence for the stated hypothesis.

The research presented number of conclusions and recommendations on this regards.
