The construction sector consumes a large part of natural resources, water and energy, the consumption of which is one of the most prominent environmental problems.

within this framework, the research is directed to smart materials, which are the gateway towards reducing the harmful effects on the environment and preserving them as well, by integrating them with information and communication technology in order to achieve a smart system where the principles of smart design are an integral part of the sustainable principles.

sustainability is a global trend in general, and local in particular, and it has three basic axes that can only be accomplished by it: environmental, social and economic.

thus, smart materials are considered an entry point for smart systems, which are an entry point for sustainability, which in turn affects the environment.

however, through the study, it was revealed that there are some challenges for using these materials at the local level.

therefore, some suggested solutions have been developed that can help in the use of smart materials on a large scale.
