The research addresses the human rights and Democracy perspective in Africa, particularly with regard to the rights mentioned in international human rights treaties.

These traditional justice systems have historically served as an alternative or complementary to the state court system.

They are usually based on the customary practices, traditions and rules of societies that have been recognized over time as customary law.

There may be a large number of traditional justice systems in a particular country where different communities often have their own customary law.

Customary law may be oral or written, and decisions may or may not be recorded on the basis of jurisprudence.
