English Abstract

At the beginning, this article calls to mind the axiom that heritage and identity are strongly related Then it goes on to show that every human group whose members have at least one epithet, special to them, becomes a social group with a special personality, and the moment it becomes coscious or that personality, it acquires its own identity As for the culture of such a group, it is the sum total of its common experience, and the group identity therefore consists in the group being conscious of its common epithets and t eir distinguishing limits, its common experience and symbols which form its culture and its collective memory .

„ vicw °r,he forgoing principles, this article proceeds to investigate the Palestinian position, and points out that the distinguishing epithet common to all Palestinians is their common Palestinian geography It is this epithet which established the first border of the Palestinian identity and because of its obvious importance, it became target to various dangers aimed at its cancellation The article is concluded by the following four-point suggestion for preservation of the components ofthe Palestinian identity I Palestinians should draw a distinction between the political entity ( - state) on the one hand and the geographic area ( = home land) on the other - Palestinians should distinguish residence from nativity 3 Palestinian* should establish their own bank of information (= Palestinian demography in diaspora).
