The phenomenon of desertification and its effects on Algerian economy

Abstract EN

Desertification, whether natural or not, is a phenomenon which takes its origins from climatic variations and/or the consequences of human activities.

This word describes a local aridification reflecting the degradation of lands which leads to biotic conditions of desert types.

Algeria is one of the countries the most affected by this phenomenon.

Desertification affects many regions, particularly the steppes which deteriorate under the influence of human and natural factors and their interferences.

The human factor scan be summarized in: deforestation, systems of culture, overexploitation of pastures, inadequate use of irrigation technologies, socioeconomic factors and specific policies.

However, the natural factors include the low; say the inexistent rainfall, high heat and wind frequency.

Techniques to combat against desertification have been the object of many researches and applications on lands.

Unfortunately, there exists no ready-made practical solution to treat the problem from its roots.

Thereby, the problem always remains and generates negative results influencing the economy.

This requires the coordination of all political, economic and sociological aspects to face this phenomenon.
