Abstract EN

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect and the role of banking system credits on the productivity of the Libyan economy during the period 1970-1985.

The research methodology followed in the study starts by specifying what is meant by the bank credits and their distribution on the productive sectors of the economy (i.e.

the Manufacturing sector, the Agricultural sector, the Construction sector, the Oil and Mining sector, and the Services sector).

Followed by a brief analysis of the productivity measure, where and econometric model based on the theory of production was specified and estimated, on the aggregate and on the sectoral levels, and estimates of elasticities with respect to factor of production and credit levels were obtained.

Then the estimated equations were used to obtain measures of the average and marginal product (AP.MP) of each dinar spent in terms of credits on the overall economy and on the sectroral levels.

The results reveal declining average and marginal product throughout the study period in the economy as a whole and in both Agriculture and Construction sectors while average prodcut and marginal product were fluctuating from year to year in Manufacturing, Oil and Services sectors.

Some conclusions, policy implications and suggestions concluded the study.
