Abstract EN

The aim of this research is to define the role of the social environment of the students in the process of selecting their majors at higher education, in which (150) students of the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences at Damascus University have taken as samples.

The descriptive analytical approach was adopted and the questionnaire, which consisted of (29) questions and distributed into three sections, was used as a tool for data collection.

The results indicated the positive relationship between the independent variable; the social environment, and the dependent variable; choosing a university major, whereas the institutions of social upbringing; especially the family and the school, direct students towards specific majors.

In addition, a relationship was found between the attitude of the social circle regarding particular majors and the student's choice of these majors.
