The water facilities in Moroccan cities varied during the Middle Ages, and the most important ones are water mills, due to the availability of their installation conditions, water abundance, a convenient topography and an increased consumption of grains.

Several individuals used to share the ownership of these water mills, and every owner has the right to use their share.

Based on geography books and Nawazil, it is possible to trace the spread of water mills in Morocco, identify its numbers as well as its architectural components and its reflection on the cities 'economy and social relations.

It is also possible to trace some conflicts; conflicts related to the location of water mills installation on the side of the river, or conflicts related to selling or renting them.
