Abstract EN

The present article sheds light upon a prominent semantic issue which is neglected by the modern translation studies, it is about meaning distinction between near-synonyms on multilingual level, so as to highlight the importance of discerning meaning differences in the activity of translation in general, and in the translation of Quranic text in particular.

For the corpus of the study, analysis is restricted to some senses verbs that appear in the Noble Qur’an, in order to survey the semantic differences between these verbs and their equivalents in both English and French versions, adopting the contrastive analysis method.

The research concludes that the semantic discrimination is crucial to attain accuracy in translation.

However, the translator is very often unable to achieve equivalence of semantic differences between the synonyms of the source text and those of the target text, this is due to two reasons: firstly, the Arabic language is more accurate in distinguishing between its meanings, whereas other languages cannot embrace all the Arabic nuances, secondly, the Quranic text is inimitable by nature.
