The rehabilitation and readapt of prisoners are one of the key objectives of punishment's application under Law n ° 05-04 of 06/02/2005 that relating to prisons organization and social rehabilitation of detainees.

To achieve this goal, the Algerian legislator must adopt a specific policy with regard to the sentence's execution, starting from the examination of detainees until their distribution and classification within the same establishment or the other penal institutions.

This distribution is based on the standards and scientific foundations recommended in Geneva by the United Nations first recommendations for the prevention of crime and criminal's treatment in 1955, which have been entered into and enshrined in the above-mentioned law by the Algerian legislator, some of these criteria are objective such as classification based on the term of imprisonment and penal position, the others are personal such as age, sex and health.
