it was only in the early 20th century, when the American Hugo Gernsback introduced him, that the reader recognized this term and this literary genre.

it is known, however, that the term appears after the characteristics of the genre have been determined.

does that mean science fiction literature appeared before this century ? how credible is to say that science fiction literature is the legitimate child of scientific and technological progress ? in order to reveal the very origin of this genre, this paper aims to make this literary genre known, trying to answer questions such as : what is science fiction literature ? is this literary genre old or new ? what are the reasons for its emergence as a distinct literary genre with its own characteristics and themes ?
