Abstract EN

In this paper, we aim to approach the narrative image semiotically based on the insight of “iconotext” studies.

the latter refers to the correlation between what is visual and what is verbal in narrative texts.

by tapping into the power of descriptive language, which can provide a fertile ground for narrative imagery, we may evoke all the functions that language can perform at a verbal level, I.E.

organization, anthropomorphism, personification, colorization and intonation ; and at a metaphorical level through the use of figurative language.

in this regards, this research attempts to address the issue of verbal iconicity : how a simple word in a narrative text can construct and draw pictures.

this process is likened to a painter's brush, a sculptor’s chisel, or a photographer's camera.

thus, words in a novel, from this standpoint, are able to portray and build mental images during the act of reading, which, in turn, transforms into an act of viewing.
