The political authority in Algeria derived its legitimacy from more than one source, the first of which was the revolutionary or historical legitimacy upon which the Algerian state was based, and the period of the liberation war was the basis for this legitimacy, in addition to that there was the charismatic legitimacy that was embodied in the charismatic character of President Houari Boumediene who also sought to Building constitutional institutions based on popular choice and thus embodying constitutional legitimacy.

After that, the Algerian political system relied on ideology as a source of the legitimacy of its authority, based on the ideas and beliefs of socialism in the economic sphere, and the one-party policy in the political sphere.
