Abstract EN

The nuclear power reactors are mainly used to generate the electric power.

The fission energy released in the reactor is used to produce steam.

The reactor core is the main component of the reactor.

It consists of: nuclear fuel, moderator and coolant.

The nuclear fuel is used to produce energy, whereas the fission energy is used to increase the coolant temperature.

The coolant transfers the temperature produced in the reactor core to the heat exchanger.

The moderators are used in the nuclear reactors to slow down the neutrons from the fission to the thermal energies.

Light elements such as light water, are used in the thermal nuclear reactors as coolants.

These thermal nuclear power reactors can be divided to two types: the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Boiling Water Reactor (BWR), which will be described precisely in this article.
