Qualification of the human component is the basic ingredient for development.
This is because individuals with high qualifications produce more and better than others, positively contributing, thus, to the economic and social growth.
If illiteracy is considered a major social dilemma that hinders the achievement of social justice among society members, literacy in general and adult literacy in particular, then, is one of the most important mechanisms for establishing the basics of social and economic stability.
Literacy grants individuals the necessary skills for an effective and fruitful integration in the social and economic life.
The illiterate is a negative power that hinders the general production movement within society and an obstacle to the achievement of the desired socio-economic development.
Adult literacy, hence, is the most efficient solution for eradicating poverty and achieving the real and effective development.
The scrutinising study of the socio-economic returns of adult literacy programs –as principal pushing factors for adults to join the training centres and actively participate in its programs- is indeed crucial in the development of the current programs and the establishment of future programs that cater for the real individual and collective needs of this group.
The aim of this study was to shed light on the influence adult literacy has on the social and economic development for the individual and society, examine its socio-economic returns, and form a clear and precise picture of this type of influence.
This study has proved that adult literacy has socio-economic returns on both the individual and collective level.
These returns enable the individual from the mechanisms of social and economic development, so he/she contributes to building his/her society.
This is because this type of literacy is connected with a group that holds the production movement, contributes to the stimulation of the economic institutions, and represents the core of social and economic development process.
