English Abstract

This study was intended to evaluate the changes in hematological parameters, body weight and the oxidative stress of rat offspring after prenatal oral administration with ethanolic extracted of salvia froticosa and/or cigarettes smoke exposure.

White albino rats were divided into four groups; control group (1), prenatally cigarette smoke exposure group (2), prenatally ethanolic extract treated group (3) and prenatally ethanolic extract treated group exposed to cigarette smoke (4).

Mothers have been treated orally with 200 mg/kg body weight of ethanolic extract of salvia fruticosa and/or cigarette smoke exposure at (3time/2 cigarette/day) during the period of pregnancy.

In adult male rat offspring; Total WBCs count and Hb level were significantly increased in groups 3,4.However, PDW,MPV,P-LCR levels were significantly decreased in groups 2,3 and 4.

MONO significantly decreased in groups 2 and 4.

MCHC, PLT and HCT significantly increased in groups 2 and 4.

RBCs significantly increased in groups 2 and 4.

RDW-CV and Hb significantly increased in group 2.

RDW-SD significantly decreased in groups 2 and 4.

MCH level, LYM count were significantly increased in group 3.

PCT is significantly increased in group 4 as compared to control group.

In adult female rat offspring; RDW-SD was significantly increased in groups 2 and 4, PDW is significantly increased in group 3, however RBCs count was significantly decreased in groups 2 and 3, Hb concentration , HCT levels and P-LCR were significantly decreased in groups 2 and 4.

WBCs count and MCHC level were significantly decreased in group 4.

LYM count was significantly decreased in group 4 .

The MPV level was significantly decreased in group 2 as compared to control group.

The Body weight of male and female rat offspring from 4th to 8th weeks were observed.

The body weight of the male and female rats offspring were significantly increased in all groups in 4th and 5th weeks.

Whereas the body weight was significantly decreased in 6th , 7 th and 8th weeks of all groups of female rats offspring .

On the other hand, The oxidative stress of GSH concentration in the kidney of adult male rat offspring was significantly decreased in groups 2, 3 and 4.

In the liver, The GSH enzyme was significantly increased in group 2.

Whereas, The GSH concentration was significantly decreased in group 3 as compared to control group.

It is concluded that prenatal ethanolic extract of salvia fruticosa treated and/or cigarette smoke exposure induced significant changes in some hematological parameters of the adult male and female rat offspring.

In addition the ethanolic extract of salvia fruticosa and cigarettes smoking exposures showed significant antioxident activity of GSH and SOD enzymes in the male rat offspring.
