Abstract EN

Empowering the Egyptian Women: A Descriptive Study to Identify the Attitudes of some Egyptian Women Intellectuals in Damietta Governorate This study generally aims at identifying the reality of women empowerment in the Egyptian society.

This goal is divided into several sub-goals.

The first is to identify the conditions of Egyptian women and the reality of their social, economic and political empowerment at the theoretical level.

The second is to identify the programs held to empower women in the Egyptian society.

The third sub-goal is to reveal reasons impeding the empowerment of women.

The fourth is concerned with the disclosure of the reciprocal relationship between the social, economic and political empowerment of women.

Another is verifying the empowerment of women in reality through some indications that show this empowerment.

Next is identifying the role of the state and private governmental institutions concerned with women in their empowerment within society.

Finally the study concludes number of mechanisms that increase the chances of empowering women socially, politically and economically.

The study utilized the descriptive analytical approach to describe the reality of empowering women in the Egyptian society.

Therefore, the in-depth interview guide was used as a basic tool for collecting data with thirty cases which are a random sample of Egyptian women intellectuals in Damietta Governorate in various disciplines.

This is done to identify their attitudes and their vision of the reality of empowering Egyptian women.

The study revealed that women have been empowered socially, economically and politically.

The study showed that the reality of women empowerment in the past differed from that of the present, and that the forms of empowerment that women have obtained, and came first, were the social and economic empowerment and then were followed by political empowerment.

In addition, it was revealed that urban women are more empowered than women in the countryside.

The findings indicate also that working women are more socially, politically and economically empowered than non-working women.

Furthermore, the study revealed that the most important impediments to empowering women are the cultural heritage and man, represented in the image of the husband.

It also came clear that there is a reciprocal relationship between social, economic and political empowerment as social empowerment proves to be the key to empowering women economically and politically.

Moreover, it was found that the role of the state and the institutions concerned with women, to some extent, does not reach all women; and, if exists, it is often largely inactive.

Key Words: Empowerment, Woman empowerment, Social empowerment, Economic empowerment, Political empowerment.
